The Expectations of Others at Christmas (Or Any Time of Year)

I’m worried because my husband’s parents are coming for Christmas and my mother in law likes everything to be perfect. We had our first baby in October and I don’t think I can possibly keep the house as tidy as I used to. I don’t want to be judged.

No, of course you don’t want to be judged and you definitely can’t be expected to make everything perfect. No reasonable person would expect it of you. All we can do in this kind of situation is make up our minds not to worry about it and be ourselves. We cannot possibly live our lives by the expectations of others and neither should we. When other people put us under pressure and make us feel inferior they are behaving inappropriately.
